Flat character illustration is cooler than I thought

Before I became interested in illustration, I thought it was a difficult field inside graphic design. I wasn’t sure if it was for me, if I’d be good at it… I thought, “yes, I kinda like drawing, but it’s not like I’m the best at it…” Little did I know how much fun it can be, and how much easier it is than I expected (hey, it’s still not the easiest thing, but it’s not difficult to start).

Okay, I’m talking about character illustration for now. But who knows? Maybe I’ll expand my learning to illustration in general. I mean, I wouldn’t exactly be sad to be able to create amazing images like these by Liya (@mochipanko).

My interest in illustrating characters began when I got this video by Cosmin Serban in my YouTube suggestions (and then binge watched like half of the videos in his channel). I saw the process of designing a flat character illustration and became interested immediately. And so I started experimenting on Adobe Illustrator.

These are some of the illustrations I did to practice. I was inspired by an illustration by Darya Semenova for the negative space effect of the pants in the second one. And also played with the strokes, making them look like they were hand drawn.

I had so much fun playing with different kinds of face features, styles, colors… And I started to look for inspiration too: I created a Pinterest board, followed some character illustrators on Instagram and copied a couple illustrations for practice.

When I felt like I had practiced full body characters enough, I wanted to try and play with poses, and creating them from scratch. I watched a couple of YouTube videos by T&T Tutorials, with wonderful tips. And I applied the advice in the illustration below, where you can see every step of the process I took.

Defining the pose with lines (1); Adding rectangles and circles to shape the body (2); Shaping the clothes and head (3)
Adding color (4); Refining the shapes and adding details (5)

Until now, this is the last illustration I did. I’ll continue practicing and updating on how it’s going! I’m very excited to keep documenting my journey in graphic design on this blog and to share it with the world.
